By Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, 26 September, 2013

In the lead up to World Heart Day this Sunday 29 September, Club Melbourne Ambassadors are raising awareness of cardiovascular disease and preparing for the World Congress of Cardiology in May 2014 at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).

Melbourne Convention Bureau and Ambassadors worked on bidding and securing the congress which is expected to attract 9000 international delegates and generate more than $36 million for the Victorian economy.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death globally, claiming 17.3 million lives each year, and in Australia alone affects around 3.5 million people.

MCEC’s Chief Executive Peter King said: “The World Congress of Cardiology is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious medical conferences and I’m proud of the Ambassadors involved in bringing this event to MCEC and Melbourne.

“The congress will provide a significant opportunity for cardiology experts and professionals from around the world to connect, network and share knowledge under the one roof.”

Three of MCEC’s Club Melbourne Ambassadors have been involved with the congress including:

  • Associate Professor David Prior – Deputy Director of Cardiology at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne and Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. Professor Prior assisted with the congress bid, is a member of the Congress Management Committee, an Ex-Officio of the Scientific Programme committee and a member of the Sponsorship Working Group.

  • Professor Ian Meredith AM – is the Professor of Cardiology at the Southern Clinical School in the Department of Medicine at Monash University, Director of Monash HEART at Monash Medical Centre and the Executive Director of the Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre. Professor Meredith is the congress topic group leader for ischaemia/coronary artery disease/coronary interventions.

  • Professor Henry Krum – a leader in cardiovascular research and currently Chair of Medical Therapeutics and Professor and Director for the Centre of Cardiovascular Research and Education in Therapeutics at Monash University. The world leading Club Melbourne Ambassador Program was recently relaunched to addresses increasing international competition to create an even stronger, focused and more supportive network to secure and host international conferences in Melbourne.

Since 2005 the elite thinkers and leaders of the Club Melbourne Ambassador Program have collectively helped to attract more than 70 international conferences, boosting the Victorian economy by $450 million, showcasing expertise in fields such as science, medicine and technology to the world and creating new global alliances and opportunities.
