EEAA TAKES ITS POWER OF EXHIBITIONS MESSAGE TO

VICTORIAN PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE AND FEDERAL PARLIAMENT

 

The Exhibition and Event Association of Australasia (EEAA) is continuing to represent members in high level advocacy targeting both Victoria and Canberra.

 

The EEAA has taken its message about the importance of exhibitions and events to the Parliament of Victoria’s Rural and Regional Inquiry into exports of goods and services.

 

EEAA Chief Executive, Joyce DiMascio, welcomed the invitation to meet with the committee when it visited Parliament House in Sydney for hearings. The members of the committee are: David O’Brien (Chairman), Paul Weller, Geoff Howard, Andrew Katos and Ian Trezise.

 

The Association’s key message is that the Victorian Government must continue to invest in renewing its events infrastructure and precincts or it risks stifling the growth of the events sector and the economic activity that stems from them.

 

“Venues like the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Melbourne Showgrounds and Royal Exhibition Building may be city-based – but what goes on in these centres has an economic impact across both the urban and regional economy.

 

“Companies from regional Victoria exhibit at these venues meeting customers and doing business. With a growing number of events now “venue bound” or unable to secure space for exhibitions, conferences and corporate events, Victoria will miss out on crucial business.”

 

This is a message that was conveyed strongly to the Parliamentarians investigating how the Victorian regional economy export potential can be harnessed.

 

“The committee was particularly interested in the opportunity for an international standard events centre to be established in the regional Victorian city of Geelong.

 

EEAA stressed that transport access, “fit for purpose” facilities and availability of quality accommodation were all major considerations for event organisers when considering locations.

EEAA’s advocacy program this week shifts its focus to Canberra when the Association joins other industry associations at Roundtable meetings in the national Capital being organised by the National Tourism Alliance.

 

The Association will be part of a strong contingent of Business Events associations including BECA, AACB and ISES who will be at the table with Trade and Investment Minister, Andrew Robb and agencies like Austrade.

 

“We are getting greater traction in Canberra on a range of fronts – there has been more engagement with our sector by this Government. Our goal is to convert the interest and engagement to outcomes that will see valuable investment and support for the business events sector.” Ms DiMascio said.

 

EEAA has had a series of high-level meetings with Austrade including with its Chief Executive, Bruce Gosper, and General Manager of Tourism Division, Deborah Lewis.

 

“Our goal is to create opportunities for our Members to work more closely with Austrade and to benefit from its global network and its business development services.”

 

The EEAA Board is helping to steer the growing relationship with Austrade and these efforts will continue in the second half of 2014.
