Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre newsletter December 2017

By Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, 13 December, 2017

Season’s greetings!

One of the real joys of the festive season is to reflect on the past 12 months, celebrate the successes and look to the future.

The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre has had a strong year that can be attributed primarily due to large investment and infrastructure growth on the Coast in conjunction with preparation of the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Centre welcomed more than 400,000 delegates and visitors to 172 events ranging from conferences and meetings to trade shows, high-energy concerts, signature dinners and special events. Consumer shows accounted for the majority of attendees with almost 10 per cent attending sporting events.

We recently welcomed the Australian Sports Commission’s Our Sporting Future conference to GCCEC, and with all the excitement building around the Commonwealth Games, expect to welcome many more sporting conferences, meetings and events in the future.

The Gold Coast Organising Committee (GOLDOC) recognised GCCEC’s reputation for service excellence and entrusted us to host the basketball and netball competitions for the Games. We also have the very important task of being the main hub for the world’s media who will be covering every aspect of the Games. A very big tick of confidence for GCCEC on all fronts.

Happily, we expect the focus on GCCEC and the Gold Coast in general will create a rise in event queries across other business and industry sectors.

With such a positive outlook on the horizon, I wish all past, present and future clients a happy, safe and relaxing Christmas and New Year.

Where Innovation & Engagement Met

There’s nothing more nerve-racking than hosting 350 experts in your own industry. But GCCEC took on the challenge and in November was the destination for the Professional Conference Organisers Association Conference.

The theme of MEETING Beyond Tomorrow had two sub-themes of Innovation and Engagement. It also happened to be the 10th anniversary of the annual conference and exhibition.

GCCEC kicked off the innovation with a stunning start to the conference when 150 delectable macarons attached to tiny parachutes floated from the ceiling on to the exhibition floor in what was a logistically complex undertaking never before tried. The feat certainly set the tone for the conversation during the rest of the three-day conference and exhibition.

Food Donations Top 1200kg

Our partnership with leading food rescue organisation OzHarvest is one of our most important initiatives.

We are proud to have donated a massive 1250kg of food to OzHarvest from January to September this year. That’s the same as the weight of 14 newborn elephants.

Acting for Kids

Christmas 2016 saw the launch of a new initiative to support the charity organisation Act of Kids which helps prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.

The Build a Bike program proved to be so popular that it has increased almost seven-fold in 2017.

Measuring Sustainability Performance

The world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism, needs help and GCCEC has volunteered.

Over the past nine years, GCCEC has aligned its practices to EarthCheck. We were the first convention centre in the world to achieve EarthCheck Gold status in recognition of our commitment to operating at the highest environmental standards. And we are now striving for Platinum accreditation.

But in another first, GCCEC volunteered to take part in a pilot study to identify efficiencies for convention centres around the globe. The study aims to create an Activity Measure that better reflects the average environmental footprint of visitors to convention centres.
