Insights – Tourism and Event Industry news | November 2017By Industry and Stakeholder News, 20 November, 2017 TOURISM AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED Outstanding tourism businesses from across NSW were honoured last night at a special ceremony at the International Convention Centre Sydney, to mark the 2017 NSW Tourism Awards. Managed by the Tourism Industry division of the NSW Business Chamber, and supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, the Awards celebrate and acknowledge tourism excellence in NSW. Speaking at the Awards, NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall highlighted the importance of tourism and events to the State’s economy and congratulated the winners. “The tourism industry contributes a phenomenal $33.2 billion per year in international and domestic visitor expenditure to the NSW economy and directly employs 164,000 people,” Mr Marshall said. “At the heart of this success are the many hard-working individuals and businesses across NSW who work tirelessly to deliver world-class tourism experiences, and I thank them for their commitment to excellence.” The NSW Tourism Awards winners will represent the State as finalists at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards on Friday, 23 February 2018. View the winners list. MURIEL’S WEDDING THE MUSICAL OPENS The highly anticipated musical adaptation of the hit movie Muriel’s Wedding, opens tomorrow in Sydney. Muriel’s Wedding The Musical has been adapted by the writer of the movie, PJ Hogan, and features original music by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said, “This exciting new home-grown production is one with global appeal and is expected to generate more than $3 million in overnight visitor expenditure for NSW during its exclusive Sydney season.” The season runs until 27 January 2018. The world premiere of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical was secured exclusively for Sydney by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. Tickets are now on sale now. RIVERINA MURRAY SHOWS BEST TOURISM PRODUCTS Destination NSW’s International Managers are travelling to the Riverina Murray to experience some of the region’s best tourism products first-hand. The nine staff from the Eastern and Western markets will visit Albury, the Murray River, Wagga Wagga, Tumbarumba, Coolamon, Junee and Corowa. NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said it was the first time Destination NSW’s International Managers have travelled to the Riverina Murray, with the visit aimed at driving more international visitors to rural and regional NSW. “Whether it’s sampling the region’s fresh local produce or taking in the beautiful natural scenery, the group will experience everything the Riverina Murray has to offer, so they can share their amazing first-hand experiences with industry partners and media back home,” Mr Marshall said. SYDNEY MODERN DESIGNS REVEALED NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin this week revealed the final designs for the expansion of the Art Gallery of NSW. The $344-million Sydney Modern Project, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA, will be a significant expansion of the floor space in the current gallery. Key features will include no artificial light directed into the night sky, rainwater harvesting, solar roof panels, minimal car-parking and low-energy air-conditioning. Mr Harwin said the plans, which went on public exhibition this week, show the blueprint for what will be one of the world’s great art museums. “An expanded Art Gallery of NSW will deliver significant benefits to all of NSW by injecting more than $1 billion into the NSW economy over 25 years and creating more than 240 fulltime jobs,” Mr Harwin said. MEDIA TAKE IN BEAUTY OF OUTBACK NSW The stark beauty of the NSW Outback will be showcased to audiences around Australia when five of the country’s leading travel and lifestyle writers make their way to the far west of the State on a group media visit. Representing True Blue (Rex Airlines), Australian Traveller, NewsLocal, Holidays with Kids and Reader’s Digest, the media group will visit Broken Hill, Menindee, Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Silverton and Mutawintji National Park this weekend. NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said the initiative is yet another great example of the NSW’s Government’s commitment to grow rural and regional tourism. “As a country Minister I am determined to share the best of the bush with the world, and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to Outback NSW as a result of this media visit.” MAMMOTHS COME TO THE AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM The world of woolly mammoths is being recreated at Mammoths – Giants of the Ice Age, an exhibition exclusive to the Australian Museum in Sydney. Opening tomorrow, the exhibition was secured with the support of the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. The interactive showcase includes mammoth skeletons and animations, plus the most complete and best preserved mammoth ever found; a 42,000-year-old baby woolly mammoth called Lyuba, found in Siberia in 2007. This is Lyuba’s first visit to the southern hemisphere. NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the exhibition will give people across Australia a rare opportunity to explore the iconic age of mammoths, their habitats and hunters, from 1.8 million to 10,000 years ago. NSW CENTRAL COAST PROMOTED AT INSTAMEET The Central Coast will be showcased to thousands of potential visitors when four leading Australian Instagram influencers promote the scenery of the region through a range of inspiring images. The images will include Somersby Falls, Pearl Beach, the Bouddi coastal walk, the Skillion at Terrigal, Long Jetty and Norah Head Lighthouse. Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and the Hunter, Scot MacDonald said the initiative was secured by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. “I am delighted that the beauty of the Central Coast will be showcased by four of Australia’s leading Instagram influencers who collectively have a social media audience of more than 365,000 followers,” Mr MacDonald said. HISTORIC RUGBY LEAGUE WOMEN’S WORLD CUP IS HERE The world’s best female rugby league players have arrived in Sydney for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup 2017 which kicked off yesterday. NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said, “This is history in the making. For the first time the women’s event will be held at the same time as the men’s, and it’s also the first time all 12 games will be televised in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. “The NSW Government is proud to invest half a million dollars to help make the Rugby League Women’s World Cup 2017 a reality.” The tournament will be played until 26 November, with the final on 2 December. The Australian Jillaroos will defend their title on home soil against pool rivals England and the Cook Islands. Tickets are on sale now. HEAD TO RALLY AUSTRALIA IN COFFS This weekend, the beautiful NSW Coffs Coast is hosting the Kennards Hire Rally Australia – the annual Australian leg and the closing round of the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship. Teams from Australia, Japan, France, Korea and Britain, among others, will tackle open-country and forestry stages, across 300km, in spectacular sub-tropical scenery. Family-friendly viewing points, easily accessible from Coffs Harbour and the surrounding region, will be available around the stages. FIND OUT MORE EVENT SECTOR GETS SKILLS BOOST The Exhibition and Event Association of Australasia (EEAA) is helping the business event sector in Australia with a new, historic industry traineeship program. Developed in partnership with TAFE NSW and Apprenticeships Support Australia, the industry traineeships program will deliver fit-for-purpose training and skills development for school leavers and people starting out in their careers. Apprenticeship Support Australia will be promoting the program through its network of employers and schools. FIND OUT MORE THREDBO MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK OPENS One of Australia’s premier mountain biking destinations, Thredbo Mountain Bike Park, opens for the season this weekend. Known for its variety of trails including downhill, cross country, all-mountain and a fast-flowing pump track, the park also has a chairlift and a team of qualified guides. NSW tourism suppliers will be invited to attend a one-day workshop held in Sydney on 13 March 2018 to meet with key Indian travel agents. The structured workshop will include one-on-one appointments with Indian agents, followed by further networking at a dinner event. FIND OUT MORE ‘GONG’ PRODUCT WINS AWARD Wollongong’s Skydive Australia has been named the best activity in NSW at the Golden Backpack Tourism Awards. The accolade recognises the service that Skydive Australia offers independent travellers at its five drop zones in NSW, including from its home base in Wollongong. The Golden Backpack Awards celebrate the achievements of companies working to make backpacking the best experience possible. FIND OUT MORE NEW EVENT DIPLOMA LAUNCHED Meetings & Events Australia (MEA) has launched a new online Diploma of Event Management. Consisting of 20 units, the course has been designed by experienced event managers and allows flexibility for students who have work commitments. The course includes coaching, workshops and work-based assessment. Applicants must be employed for a minimum of one year in event management. FIND OUT MORE SYDNEY TO HOST PATHOLOGY EVENT Business Events Sydney has announced that Sydney will host the 2022 Congress of the International Academy of Pathology. The biennial congress, to be held at the new International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), is expected to attract approximately 2,200 delegates over five days, and is anticipated to bring an estimated $6.7 million to the local economy. Accolades were awarded for exhibition projects, visitor engagement programs, capacity building and individual achievement. Among the winners were the Museum of the Riverina for Talking Machine; and Bathurst Regional Art Gallery for Generation Art. VIEW THE WINNERS TWO NSW AIRPORTS WIN MAJOR AWARDS Sydney Airport has been recognised at the Australian Airports Association’s (AAA) National Airport Industry awards, picking up the prestigious Airport of the Year award. The AAA National Airport Industry Awards, celebrate and honour excellence within Australia’s airport industry. Coffs Harbour Regional Airport also picked up the award for Large Regional Airport.
