Well, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has come and gone and boy, did we put on a show on the Gold Coast!

I’m very proud that the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) hosted more than 95,000 fans over 11 days without a hitch. Those excited fans saw some of the world’s best netballers and basketball players take centre court in our Arena space. I’m especially proud of our team who transformed the netball court to a basketball court overnight.

It was a mammoth effort to not only host the sports but the international media too. Some interesting statistics to come out of the 11 days included:

  • Between 25 March and 16 April, there were 130,614 spectators, media, contractors and volunteers who attended GCCEC
    • 21, 011 cups of tea and coffee were purchased
    • 43,463L or 88,939 beverages were drunk
    • 3,396kg or 35.012km of hot chips were eaten
    • More than 800 metres of truss and 113 hoists were suspended from the roof structure
    • 16 tonnes of AV equipment, broadcast lighting, banners and rigging were suspended in the Arena including a 3.8 tonne LED screen cube and 7.5 tonnes of equipment suspended in the Exhibition Halls.

The Games allowed us to show off our latest technological innovation which you can read more about later in this newsletter.

The rush of the Games hadn’t even started to fade and thanks to good strategic planning we were straight into the comicon expo Supanova, which attracted another 30,000 excited fans, and Infinitus, one of the largest direct selling conferences out of China. We haven’t stopped since, with conferences, meetings and expos almost back-to-back over the past seven weeks which I’m sure this is set to continue into the future. Exciting times ahead.
